Seminar on export controls compliance inspections

When:  24th March - 24th March 2023

Where:  Online

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment will host an online event for business and industry representatives about export control compliance inspections on 24 March 2023.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment is the national competent authority in Ireland with responsibility for enforcing national and EU controls on the export of sensitive items. These controls form part of a global framework designed to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, to preserve regional stability and to protect human rights. Sensitive items subject to export control include:

  • dual-use items (products and components, including software and technology, which can be used for both civil and military purposes)
  • military items
  • goods which may be used for capital punishment, torture, or other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment
  • firearms for personal use (for example, for hunting, sports)
  • exports to countries subject to EU/UN trade sanctions

Authorised Officers from the department monitor compliance by visiting companies. As the department is currently stepping up these checks, it is timely that businesses familiarise themselves once again with the controls but also to know what an inspection looks like and what Authorised Officers will look for on an inspection.

This online seminar will provide an introduction to compliance inspections. It will focus on what inspection visits look like, what Authorised Officers will be looking into and how exporters should prepare for an inspection visit.

Authorised Officers will also discuss common errors that they encounter while conducting onsite compliance inspections as well as steps to prevent these issues arising.
