2023 National Accounting Competition Winners

 

CPA Ireland and gamification application Quitch have announced the winners of the 2023 National Accounting Competition.

  • 1st Place, €1000 – Chenlu Lin from Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest  
  • 2nd Place, €600 – Alexandra Kuran from Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest 
  • 3rd Place, €300 – Gary McClintock from the Atlantic Technological University Sligo 
  • Winning College, €500 - Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest  

Chenlu Lin and Alexandra Kuran placed first and second, both second-year students, on the BA (Hons) in Accounting with Finance at the Technological University of the Shannon, Midlands, Midwest. Gary McClintock, a first-year student on the BA (Honours) in Accounting from the Atlantic Technological University in Sligo, placed third.

The Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest was the ‘Winning College’ for the second year running.

Participants included first- to final-year accounting and business students as well as master’s and postgraduate students from 21 colleges across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Each week, a range of theory-based accounting questions were released to participants on the Quitch app. Participants scored points for correctly answering questions and for how quickly they answered the questions. Participants could monitor their progress under their avatar name and see their score on a leaderboard along with the other participants.

Brendan McLarney, Lecturer in Accounting at Technological University of the Shannon Midlands Midwest, said, "We are delighted to see our accounting students winning the top two prizes in the 2023 National Accounting Competition. This is the second year in a row that one of our accounting students has won the competition, which is a great testament to the quality of the BA in Accounting programme at TUS Athlone. These awards are recognition of the hard work and dedication of the students and staff within the Department of Accounting and Business Computing".

John Gaynor, Programme Chair BA (Hons) in Accounting and Lecturer in Accounting at Atlantic Technological University's Sligo Campus, said, ‘Congratulations to Gary McClintock for winning third prize in the 2023 National Accounting Competition. This is a fantastic achievement for Gary, who is a first-year student on our BA (Hons) in Accounting at ATU Sligo. Thank you to CPA Ireland and Quitch for using technology to enhance the students learning’.
 
Grainne Oats, CEO of Quitch, said, "I would like to congratulate Chenlu, the other winners, and everyone who has participated in this year’s competition. We were delighted to partner with CPA Ireland again and provide students with a platform where they could use game-based techniques to answer theory-based accounting questions. There were brilliant results in the competition, and we would like to congratulate everyone who took part."
