MARIAN FINNEGAN,
CHIEF ECONOMIST & DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH, SHERRY FITZGERALD

CATH MATTHEWS,
CPA IRELAND

Marian Finnegan is the chief economist and director of research with the Sherry FitzGerald Group. She graduated from NUI Galway with a Bachelor of Arts and subsequently completed a Masters of Arts in Economics in 1993. Marian joined Sherry FitzGerald Group in 1996 having worked for a number of years in academia, where she specialised in urban economics. While working in academia, Marian lectured economics to undergraduate level at both the University of Limerick and the Shannon College of Hotel Management, which is affiliated to NUI Galway. While working in University of Limerick, she was also involved in an international research team whose function was to analyse the development of European cities.

Marian was appointed an Associate Director of Sherry FitzGerald in 1997 and a Director of Sherry FitzGerald in 1998. Heading up a team of six, Marian’s position in the Sherry FitzGerald Group involves monitoring and analysing economic and property indicators in the domestic and international markets. She is also the spokesperson for the Group and regularly writes and lectures on the property market.

Cath Matthews is a member of CPA Ireland appointed as a Professional Standards Executive of CPA Ireland in 2017. Previous to this, Cath worked as an Education and Quality Assurance Executive in another Accountancy Body and also has vast industry experience obtained through working with a wide range of SMEs.

She is technically up to date with emerging changes in Internationals Accounting Standards, Taxation and Company compliance issues and currently a member of CPA Ireland’s Financial Reporting Sub Committee. this Committee represents the views of the Institute to the IASB, FRC, ODCE, IFAC, ASB and other bodies as appropriate on exposure drafts and consultation papers issued.

She has worked for many years in academia and specialises in Corporate Reporting and Taxation and currently lecturing on the Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons) Degree programme in Dublin Institute of Technology. She enjoys the lecturing and very interested in transferring her knowledge and skills to the students who have embraced their subjects and excelled in their examinations.

KPMG

PHILIP O'CONNOR,
GATELY CAPITUS LTD.

Ethna is a specialist in Value Added Tax (VAT), working as a Director in KPMG Ireland with 15 years' experience in taxation advisory services.  She works with a wide range of domestic and multinational businesses to help them meet their VAT compliance obligations and manage their tax risk and VAT cashflow.

She has expertise in advising on VAT matters in relation to the following:

  • Property / Real estate transactions
  • Software and e-services
  • Cross border transactions and supply chain management
  • Financial services transactions such as banking, funds, insurance and securitisations
  • Manufacturing and retail
  • VAT operational issues and compliance

She enjoys training and regularly makes VAT presentations and lectures on VAT matters for professional bodies such as the Irish Tax Institute, CPA Ireland, Chartered Accountants Ireland and the Law Society.

Philip is a dual qualified chartered quantity surveyor and taxation advisor at Gateley Capitus with over eleven years’ experience advising on property related tax incentives.

He specialises in Irish capital allowances and is also an expert on UK capital allowances. He advises on entitlement issues, valuation and maximisation of property tax reliefs and also have experience in negotiations with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and the HMRC.

He also provides advice on developments, fit-outs, refurbishments, investment property acquisitions and disposals

Aubrey is a Director and the co-founder of Gatelely Capitus and has almost 30 years’ experience advising companies and individuals on the maximisation and use of tax-based incentives for commercial property investment and development.
